Intro: I am sam. Sam I am. Do you like Green Eggs and Ham?

Following the Holy Spirit will make you who you are.

Jesus fame rose because of the Holy Spirit.
Jesus was obedient to his call.
Luke 4:
Luke 4:15 NLT
15 He taught regularly in their synagogues and was praised by everyone.

God will make your name great.

Obedience to the will of God brings success.
Jesus is doing the Lord’s work and this work is impacting peoples lives.
The reports of Jesus are spreading.

We are to make God’s name great.

We are to extol the name of the Lord.
Psalm 34:1 NLT
1 I will praise the Lord at all times. I will constantly speak his praises.
We are to extol the name of the Lord.
We are to proclaim the gospel and make the name of the Lord great in our life.

Let me make this announcement today, that studying of God’s word is important.

Luke 4:15 NLT
15 He taught regularly in their synagogues and was praised by everyone.
We are to study the word of God.
Sunday school and Bible study should a vital part of your time of worship.
Worship to the Lord involves:
Knowing his word.
Obeying his word.
Proclaiming his word.

Jesus is the living Word

Luke 4:16–21 NLT
16 When he came to the village of Nazareth, his boyhood home, he went as usual to the synagogue on the Sabbath and stood up to read the Scriptures. 17 The scroll of Isaiah the prophet was handed to him. He unrolled the scroll and found the place where this was written: 18 “The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, for he has anointed me to bring Good News to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim that captives will be released, that the blind will see, that the oppressed will be set free, 19 and that the time of the Lord’s favor has come.” 20 He rolled up the scroll, handed it back to the attendant, and sat down. All eyes in the synagogue looked at him intently. 21 Then he began to speak to them. “The Scripture you’ve just heard has been fulfilled this very day!”
Luke 4:16-

Jesus the suffering servant revealed.

Jesus is quoting from Isaiah. We can find that today in
Isaiah 61:1–2 NLT
1 The Spirit of the Sovereign Lord is upon me, for the Lord has anointed me to bring good news to the poor. He has sent me to comfort the brokenhearted and to proclaim that captives will be released and prisoners will be freed. 2 He has sent me to tell those who mourn that the time of the Lord’s favor has come, and with it, the day of God’s anger against their enemies.
Isaiah 61:1-2
Jesus reading this servant song is part of the worship and teaching is on thing. Jesus telling them this has been fulfilled is a whole another thing.
Luke 4:20–21 NLT
20 He rolled up the scroll, handed it back to the attendant, and sat down. All eyes in the synagogue looked at him intently. 21 Then he began to speak to them. “The Scripture you’ve just heard has been fulfilled this very day!”
Luke 4:
Jesus saying this text has been fulfilled before them today speaks of the age of salvation. Since Jesus said that it has come it has not ceased to be. Salvation is still here today. That is the power of God ‘s word.
Hebrews 13:8 NLT
8 Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever.
Just like the light has not stopped shining since God said, “Let there be light.” How true it is also that the following are still present:
The Good News to the poor
Freedom for the captives
Giving the blind sight
Freedom of the oppression
And the favor of the Lord

When people do not know you like God knows you.

Luke 4:22 NLT
22 Everyone spoke well of him and was amazed by the gracious words that came from his lips. “How can this be?” they asked. “Isn’t this Joseph’s son?”
Luke 4:
This text does not say isn’t he that carpenter.
Mark 6:3 NLT
3 Then they scoffed, “He’s just a carpenter, the son of Mary and the brother of James, Joseph, Judas, and Simon. And his sisters live right here among us.” They were deeply offended and refused to believe in him.
Mark 6:3
Matthew’s gospel ask is this not the carpenter’s son?
Matthew 13:55 NLT
55 Then they scoffed, “He’s just the carpenter’s son, and we know Mary, his mother, and his brothers—James, Joseph, Simon, and Judas.
Matthew

People may doubt you and judge you by what they see.

God knows what he has called you to be and what is ahead.
Jesus being a carpenter, a son of a carpenter, and not a leader in the synagogue makes him look less to the others.
Jesus evidence of his power and authority is evident before them.
Living out this gospel life is what God calls us to do. Living out this gospel may lead to people to reject us. However remember we re not living for the world buy living for the Lord. Jesus, God himself was willing to suffer rejection for the glory of God. Let us look closer to the struggles of rejection Jesus went through.

Know who you are in God

Jesus understand their rejection:
Luke 4:
Luke 4:23–24 NLT
23 Then he said, “You will undoubtedly quote me this proverb: ‘Physician, heal yourself’—meaning, ‘Do miracles here in your hometown like those you did in Capernaum.’ 24 But I tell you the truth, no prophet is accepted in his own hometown.
Jesus knew being rejected does not remove who he is.
He is our healer.
He is our savior.
Jesus being rejected does not stop the power of salvation. This what leads to Jesus expressing how Elijah and Elisha did powerful miracles outside of Israel as seen in .
Luke 4:25–27 NLT
25 “Certainly there were many needy widows in Israel in Elijah’s time, when the heavens were closed for three and a half years, and a severe famine devastated the land. 26 Yet Elijah was not sent to any of them. He was sent instead to a foreigner—a widow of Zarephath in the land of Sidon. 27 And many in Israel had leprosy in the time of the prophet Elisha, but the only one healed was Naaman, a Syrian.”
Luke 4:25-27

Beware of pride!

People full of pride think they have a right to be judge and jury.
Pride dulls your ears and limits you from hearing other people;
Lack of humility and able to receive constructive criticism.
Prideful people are slow to apologize.

There pride limit them to see their Messiah!

Luke 4:28
Luke 4:28–30 NLT
28 When they heard this, the people in the synagogue were furious. 29 Jumping up, they mobbed him and forced him to the edge of the hill on which the town was built. They intended to push him over the cliff, 30 but he passed right through the crowd and went on his way.

We are Children of God

Know who you are.
Genesis 1:26–27 NLT
26 Then God said, “Let us make human beings in our image, to be like us. They will reign over the fish in the sea, the birds in the sky, the livestock, all the wild animals on the earth, and the small animals that scurry along the ground.” 27 So God created human beings in his own image. In the image of God he created them; male and female he created them.
We are image bearers of God formed to worship him.
God
Know who you are in God.
Know you are loved by him.
Know you are saved by God to do his work.
You are His.
